Harassment from higher officials forcing Anganwadi workers to resort to suicide: Achanta Sunitha

Amaravathi, Dec 10: The senior TDP leader and state president of the Anganwadi wing, Ms Achanta Sunitha, on Saturday said that the Jagan Mohan Reddy Government is harassing the Anganwadi workers in the State and their salaries have not been paid ontime for the past three-and-half years but setting targets to them.

Talking to media persons here, Ms Achanta Sunitha said that the Anganwadi workers are resorting to suicide due to heavy work pressure as they are unable to meet the targets. The Government should pay Rs 50 lakh each to the Anganwadi workers who resorted to suicide, she said.

“Two workers each in East Godavari and Anantapur districts committed suicide as they could not endure the harassment from higher officials in the nameo f inspections,” Ms Sunitha said. Tremining these suicides as the killings by the Government, she asked who will take care of the children of those who are resorting to such suicides.

The local officials did not even console the family members of these Anganwadi workers, she said, adding that the officers are harassing the workers with the support of the Government. She said that the salaries of these workers are not being paid ontime for the past three years and they are not even getting the welfare programmes.

Power bills of the Anganwadi Centres are not being paid properly and this is causing another burden on them, Ms Sunitha stated. Ms Achanta Sunitha demanded immediate action against the officers who harassed the Anganwadi workers and pay Rs 50 lakh each to the kin of those who committed suicide.
