Hyderabad, May 21: AICC spokesperson Dr Dasoju Sravan demanded Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to take action on GMR Group for unauthorisedly removing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s name from Hyderabad International Airport Website and renaming it as GMR Hyderabad International Airport. Expressing severe displeasure over renaming of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Dr Dasoju Sravan urged CM KCR to take steps immediately to restore the original name and also ensure that a Hall of Fame, Photo, statue of Rajiv Gandhi are set up at Hyderabad airport, as mark of respect to the visionary leader, who laid down his life for the nation.
“As India is paying tributes to legendary leader Rajiv Gandhi on his 31st death anniversary, it is painful to note that the name of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has been removed from their website. as GMR Hyderabad International Airport.
How can GMR Group remove Rajiv Gandhi’s name from their website without the approval of Telangana Government and Centre? Is it not against Law and the rules laid down by the Ministry of Civil Aviation regarding changing names of airports in the country? In a statement mentioned by the Civil Aviation Minister in 2018, it was clarified in the parliament that, generally airports names are changed only after a request from a state government, after passing a resolution in the Assembly.
It is clearly evident that GMR Group has changed the name of Hyderabad airport unauthorisedly. CM KCR should immediately take steps to restore the original name of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport for Hyderabad airport,” said Dr Dasoju Sravan in a press statement issued on Saturday.
Dr Dasoju Sravan on Saturday wrote an open letter to Telangana CM regarding the unauthorised name change of Hyderabad airport by GMR Group. He expressed severe disapproval over the way GMR Group has disrespected former PM Rajiv Gandhi, who was instrumental in bringing in many landmark changes in the history of India.
“GMR Group has not just changed the airport’s name but it has completely humiliated former PM Rajiv Gandhi, who sacrificed his life for the nation. The official website of Hyderabad airport www.hyderabad.aero does not feature an image of Rajiv Gandhi, who was also a professional pilot. Not even one picture or poster of Rajiv Gandhi is also displayed in the airport premises.
It is during the UPA’s tenure under the leadership and support of Sonia Gandhi that the airport came into existence,” pointed out Dr Dasoju Sravan.
“Telangana Government has 13 percent stake in Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad. Without its consent how can GMR Group change the airport’s name? CM KCR, who worked with Rajiv Gandhi as youth Congress leader, very well knows the contribution of the late PM to the nation. It was Rajiv who ushered in the technological revolution in India. The smart phones, computers and latest technological advances we are enjoying today are results of Rajiv Gandhi’s visionary leadership. He was also instrumental in bringing down voting age to 18 years and ensuring reservations for women in panchayats.
It is the responsibility of everyone cutting across party lines to respect Rajiv Gandhi and get inspired from his leadership and life. Besides restoring the original name, CM KCR should ensure that a 100-ft tall statue and Hall of Fame are set up in memory of Rajiv Gandhi,” urged Dr Dasoju Sravan.
